Biodiversity encompasses ecological diversity, that is, the variety of ecosystems such as forests, deserts and oceans. It also includes species diversity, which refers to all animal, plant and microbial species. Finally, biodiversity covers genetic diversity, or the variety of genes within species, allowing the adaptation and evolution of organisms in the face of environmental changes.
